Vietnamese word list

The 100 most common Vietnamese words

Last updated

A hundred words cover an outsized share of everyday Vietnamese. Learn the pronouns, tense markers, and core verbs first, and the rest of the language becomes far easier to pick up.

How to use this list

Do not work through this list top to bottom. Read down it and mark only the words you could not have produced yourself. Those are your list. The rest are already yours, and reviewing them is wasted effort better spent on words you actually meet in reading, conversation, or subtitles.

The ones English speakers get wrong

Tones change the word entirely

Vietnamese has six tones, and changing pitch changes meaning completely, not just emphasis. "ma" (ghost), "má" (mother, southern usage), "mà" (but), "mả" (grave), "mã" (code/horse), and "mạ" (rice seedling) are six different words spelled with the same letters. Getting the tone wrong isn't a minor accent slip, it's a different word.

Pronouns encode relationship, not just person

Vietnamese doesn't have one fixed word for "you". You pick anh, chị, em, bạn, or others based on the listener's age and gender relative to you, and the same word can mean "I" or "you" depending on who's speaking. Get comfortable with anh, chị, and em early, since they cover most everyday conversations.

cái vs. con

Vietnamese nouns take a classifier before them. cái is the default classifier for inanimate objects (cái bàn, the table), while con is used for animals and a few other living or moving things (con mèo, the cat; con sông, the river). Using the wrong one is a common beginner slip.

đã, đang, sẽ are optional, not mandatory

Vietnamese verbs don't conjugate for tense, and these markers (đã for past, đang for ongoing, sẽ for future) are often dropped once the time is already clear from context, like a time word earlier in the sentence. Don't expect every sentence to carry one.

là vs. thì

là is the actual verb "to be" (Tôi là sinh viên, I am a student). thì is a topic or conditional marker, roughly "then" or "as for", and shows up after a clause to set up the next one (Nếu trời mưa thì tôi ở nhà, if it rains then I'll stay home). They're easy to mix up because both can sit in a similar spot in a sentence.

What to do next

A list this size is about two weeks of light daily review, and it is the difference between decoding Vietnamese and following it.
