A small set of words does most of the work in everyday Latvian: pronouns, prepositions, and the verbs that show up again and again. Learning this hundred first isn't about memorizing vocabulary for its own sake, it's the fastest way to start recognizing real sentences. Once these words are automatic, everything else you read or hear has fewer gaps in it.
How to use this list
Do not work through this list top to bottom. Read down it and mark only the words you could not have produced yourself. Those are your list. The rest are already yours, and reviewing them is wasted effort better spent on words you actually meet in reading, conversation, or subtitles.

The ones English speakers get wrong
ka vs. kad
These two words differ by a single letter but do very different jobs. 'Ka' means 'that' and introduces a clause, as in 'Es zinu, ka tev taisnība' (I know that you're right). 'Kad' means 'when,' as in 'Kad tu nāksi?' (When will you come?). Mixing them is one of the most common slips for learners.
No verb for 'to have'
Latvian doesn't have a direct equivalent of 'to have.' Instead, possession is built with the dative case plus 'ir' (is): 'Man ir suns' literally means 'to me there is a dog,' i.e. 'I have a dog.' There's no 'having' verb to conjugate at all.
Definite vs. indefinite adjective endings
Latvian has no articles like 'a' or 'the.' Instead, adjectives carry two different endings to mark definiteness: 'labs' (a good, indefinite) versus 'labais' (the good one, definite). Which form to use depends on whether the noun is being introduced for the first time or already known.
Tonal accent on long syllables
Latvian long vowels and diphthongs carry one of three pitch patterns (level, falling, or broken), and the pattern can be the only thing distinguishing two otherwise identical-looking words. It's subtle for English speakers, since English doesn't use pitch this way at all.
teikt vs. sacīt
Both mean 'to say,' but they share a single present-tense conjugation built from the root of 'sacīt': 'es saku, tu saki, viņš saka.' 'Teikt' is the form usually cited as the infinitive, so learners often expect a present tense built from 'teikt' and are thrown off when it never appears.
What to do next
A list this size is about two weeks of light daily review, and it is the difference between decoding Latvian and following it.
