How to use this list

The ones English speakers get wrong

essere vs. stare

Both translate as "to be", but Italian splits the job. Essere covers identity, origin, and qualities: sono stanco, è italiana. Stare covers staying somewhere, health in greetings (come stai?), and the progressive (sto mangiando). When in doubt, essere is the safer default, and the stare uses are best learned phrase by phrase.

sapere vs. conoscere

English uses "to know" for both, but Italian does not. Sapere (rank 32) is for facts and skills: so dove sono le chiavi, so nuotare. Conoscere is for familiarity with people and places: conosco Marco, conosco bene Roma. Before you speak, ask yourself whether you know a piece of information or are acquainted with someone; that choice picks the verb for you.

che, chi, ci: the h flips the sound

In Italian, c before e or i is soft, like English "ch": ci (rank 23) sounds like "chee". Adding an h makes it hard: che (rank 3) and chi (rank 46) sound like "keh" and "kee". This is the reverse of what English spelling suggests, and the same rule applies to g, so spaghetti has a hard g. Say perché and anche out loud with a k sound until it feels normal.

molto vs. troppo

Molto (rank 51) means "very" or "a lot" and is neutral; troppo (rank 77) means "too" or "too much" and always signals excess. Il caffè è molto caldo is a description, while il caffè è troppo caldo is a complaint. English speakers often reach for troppo as an intensifier, which can make a compliment sound like a problem, so use molto unless you really mean something has gone past the limit.

What to do next

A list this size is about two weeks of light daily review, and it is the difference between decoding Italian and following it.
