Hmong Daw word list

The 100 most common Hmong Daw words

Last updated

Hmong Daw builds most everyday speech from a small core of words: pronouns, classifiers, and a set of verbs that never change form no matter who's doing the action or when. Learning these hundred words first gives you a real foothold in the language, without getting lost in the tone system all at once.

How to use this list

Do not work through this list top to bottom. Read down it and mark only the words you could not have produced yourself. Those are your list. The rest are already yours, and reviewing them is wasted effort better spent on words you actually meet in reading, conversation, or subtitles.

The ones English speakers get wrong

Final letters mark tone, not sound

Letters like -b, -j, -v, -s, -m, and -g at the end of a Hmong Daw word are not pronounced as consonants at all. They mark one of the language's tones. 'Koj' (you) ends in -j for a high-falling tone, it is not pronounced like an English 'j' sound.

peb means both 'we' and 'three'

'Peb' is a genuine homophone: it means 'we/us' in one context and the number 'three' in another. Listeners tell them apart from context alone, the same way English speakers separate 'to,' 'too,' and 'two.'

rau means both 'six' and 'to/for'

The same is true of 'rau,' which is the number six and also a common preposition meaning 'to,' 'for,' or 'into,' as in 'Qhov no yog rau koj' (this is for you). Context, not spelling, tells you which one is meant.

tus vs. lub (classifiers)

Hmong Daw requires a classifier before most nouns, similar to how English says 'a piece of paper' rather than just 'a paper.' 'Tus' is used for people and animals, while 'lub' is the general classifier used for many everyday objects like houses and cars. Picking the wrong one is a common learner mistake.

Verbs never change form

Hmong Daw verbs stay exactly the same no matter the subject or the time being talked about. There is no conjugation at all. Instead, separate words carry that information, such as 'yuav' for future actions or 'tau' for something already completed, alongside time words like 'nag hmo' (yesterday) and 'tag kis' (tomorrow).

What to do next

A list this size is about two weeks of light daily review, and it is the difference between decoding Hmong Daw and following it.
