Croatian word list

The 100 most common Croatian words

Last updated

Croatian has no articles, so the words doing the heavy lifting are pronouns, conjunctions, and a core set of verbs. These hundred words show up again and again in ordinary conversation, and knowing them cold makes everything you read or hear afterward easier to parse.

How to use this list

Do not work through this list top to bottom. Read down it and mark only the words you could not have produced yourself. Those are your list. The rest are already yours, and reviewing them is wasted effort better spent on words you actually meet in reading, conversation, or subtitles.

The ones English speakers get wrong

Adjectives agree in gender, number, and case

dobar (good) becomes dobra for feminine nouns and dobro for neuter, and it changes again depending on the noun's case. dobar dan (a good day) but dobra knjiga (a good book). English speakers often get the base form right and forget it has to match everything around it.

Seven cases replace most prepositions

Croatian nouns change ending depending on their grammatical role: u Zagrebu (in Zagreb, locative) versus u Zagreb (to Zagreb, accusative) use the same preposition but different noun endings to distinguish location from motion. The case, not just the preposition, carries the meaning.

ti vs. vi

ti is the informal 'you', used with friends, family, and children. vi is both the plural 'you' and the formal singular, used with strangers, elders, or anyone you'd address respectfully. Switching from vi to ti with someone new is a real social signal, not just grammar.

Verb aspect: pairs like pisati and napisati

Most Croatian verbs come in imperfective and perfective pairs. pisati means 'to write' as an ongoing or repeated action, while napisati means 'to write' as a completed act. Picking the wrong one changes whether an action is in progress, habitual, or finished, something English usually handles with tense alone.

č, ć, š, ž, and đ are distinct sounds

č and ć are both close to English 'ch', but č is harder and ć is softer, and mixing them up changes real words, the way kuća (house) sounds wrong if you swap in the other letter. These diacritics are not decorative, they mark separate phonemes that Croatian speakers hear clearly.

What to do next

A list this size is about two weeks of light daily review, and it is the difference between decoding Croatian and following it.
